Choosing a Registry Cleaner

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

There are a number of different options available when choosing a registry cleaning program, just as there are for other PC optimization programs.

Whether you’re searching for free software or if you don’t mind spending some money, there are some things you need to know when you are looking for a registry cleaner that works.

That’s what we’re here to do today - we are going to outline the bare-bones features that your next registry cleaning application should have.

Some registry cleaners only clean out “empty” registry entries. However, a major culprit in registry-related errors, pop-up messages, and even overall computer instability is invalid entries in your registry.

A registry entry, in some cases, contains the location of important files on your computer; files that certain applications need in order to function properly. If a registry cleaner manages to clean out the empty entries, yet leaves the invalid entries intact - that can affect your computer’s performance significantly.

No registry cleaning program is perfect all of the time, even if the best of the best registry cleaning software is purchased. However, this is not usually caused by the registry cleaning software itself, but by a corrupt registry or a poorly written program that was previously installed or installed.

If the registry cleaning program causes some sort of after the fact problem for certain applications, it is critical that you have the ability to restore the registry to its previous state in order to regain functionality to the affected applications. Since this feature is very important, it is recommended that any program used should offer registry backups as part of the cleaning process.

Registry cleaning can be compared to brain surgery in a way -it can be very finicky. Even computer pros back up the registry before any changes are made so it is easy to see that novices should be very vigilant and create a backup before making any changes to the system’s registry.

This is a very short list since our intention was to cover just the basic features that should be present in an adequate registry repair program. There are certainly features that can improve the security of a registry cleaning program, and features that will be of a convenience to you, but as you’re looking for a registry cleaning program for your PC - be sure that your registry cleaner of choice gives you these two options. Otherwise, not only will be wasting your time, but you could be setting yourself up for some big problems down the road.
